A Shrubbery brought to you by Troop 175

It wasn’t England 932 AD in the land of Camelot, but the brave knights of troop 175 trekked out in the snow, rain and even flooding to join the amazing 2013 camporee team in reenacting Monty Python’s The Holy Grail – this time at Camp Oh Da Ko Ta in Burlington Wisconsin.

Our trip setup and departure while cold and windy, was also very orderly and fraught with almost zero traffic. It’s amazing how much more congested the highways are once the weather warms up. We would have made it to camp in amount 90 minutes except for the detour due to the flooding – thank goodness for Google maps.

It was still light when we setup and we were done in under an hour. Enough time left over to get to the dining and watch the Holy Grail movie. Two of our new scouts were asked to help serve popcorn and they did a great job!

As it snowed on the way back, we were hoping that it would not be too cold while we slept. Unfortunately, that was not the case at all.

However, the next morning was glorious; cool but clear and sunny.

Bacon thief!

We dispensed with the usual breakfast items – bacon, pancakes and even some French toast. There was much rejoicing by all – yay!!! (From the movie)

Then, Arthur, King of the Britons, after determining whether an African or European swallow was responsible for bringing in the coconuts, passed out our quests.

These included stations like: “Bring Out Your Dead”, and the “Castle Arrrrgggghhh”.

The scouts of Troop 175 were broken into 2 patrols – the Flaming Arrows and the Silver Sharks. Both were exemplary in their scout skills and knowledge of Holy Grail search (although neither found it).

They worked well together as a team, and even won first place in the “Bring out your dead” First Aid station. Great job Flaming Arrows.

The game of “Thief” was a big hit once again. Most of the boys could not be caught and made it to the target point. – this is a game were everyone is told there is a thief in the camp and he is going to steal something and try to get somewhere before anyone catches him. No one knows who the thief is. Usually the item is large enough that they cannot hide it on their person and thus they have to grab and dash with it. We must have played 10 rounds of it.

They also had lots of fun with the metal detector. They found 4 extra stakes and I think for once we have so many that we should start selling them! (That’s the whole reason we bring it! – plus its fun)

Dinner was a veritable smorgasbord. Cheeseburgers, Spaghetti and meatballs as well as a peach cobbler and a taco cobbler. Lots of full stomachs.

The evening campfire included a skit by both our patrols. The campfire began with the OA trying to light the Trojan rabbit on fire with a burning carrot.

Alas it did not make it to the destination, but they managed to burn it anyway.

We had 3 scouts and 2 leaders tapped out in the OA ceremony and look forward to their ordeals.

Saturday evening was not as cold as the previous night and the boys seemed a bit more prepared for it – LAYERS , LAYERS, LAYERS!!!

Sunday was a quick take down and clean up with perfect weather.

The Knights Who Say NEET were able to get a shrubbery and Troop 175 managed to get a quick and safe trip home. Great job Scouts and here’s to another excellent Camporee by Troop 160. We’ll be doing it next year!
