STORIES of TROOP 175

Woodbadge – back then.

Dear Fellow 2012 Woodbagders,

One of my ticket items is to create a troop history of my home troop 175 here in Niles. I was a member of this troop as a youth and thankfully many of the people who were there with me are still around. An important one is my former Scoutmaster, Leo Weiss. Some of you may remember him as he was very active in district events up until the 90s (he tells me that Blackhawk used to be 2 different districts). He is still part of our troop and he is one of the reasons I decided to do Woodbadge this year (he is also very persistent). He began his time with Scouting in 1973 and did his first Woodbadge course in 1978. He later was on staff in 1988.

I say important because he recently provided me with a ton of old pictures for my ticket along with an index to each of them.  I thought many of you would enjoy seeing some of these as they were taken at Lakota in 78 and 88 during his Woodbadge course. Many of them look like they could have been from ours:

Coming up the stairs to Gilwell at Lakota:

Can you just hear them singing "Back to Gilwell Happy land....."

I’m sure you can imagine them signing the Gilwell song here! (this is almost 35 years ago)

Flag ceremony

They were most likely passing on the stave here. Look at their Woodbadge name tags – same as today .

Same thing here perhaps.

Looks like we weren’t the only ones who struggled making the woggles!

I think we played this game too!!! ( I know, it’s a new course since 2000)

They made some cool Patrol flags too!

I thought for a minute this might be Mike Tangen’s Dad running the “you can have whatever you want game”!

It appears they did some pioneering projects back then too! (sorry for the blur).

These looked fun!

It looks like they all graduated (EC155W)- sitting on the same chairs that we used just a few months ago!

Hope you all enjoy this little bit of history! ( maybe this can be a “mini ticket” for me – Jim?)
